Javan rhino PROtection
We protect the critically endangered Javan Rhino from poachers
JAAN has trained sniffer dogs and is actively patrolling Ujung Kulon National Park (TNUK) to protect the remaing Javan Rhino's from poachers.

With approximatly 40 species left, the Javan Rhino is critically endangered and urgently needs to be protected.
Confined to a single population in Ujung Kulon National Park on Java, Indonesia, Javan Rhinos face constant threats from poaching, habitat loss, disease, and natural disasters. One event could wipe out the entire population. Protecting every remaining rhino is critical to prevent extinction and to preserve one of Indonesia's most iconic and irreplaceable species for future generations.

Thats why, in 2025, JAAN created the first anti-poaching K9 unit in Indonesia! It operates within Ujung Kulon National Park and protects the remaining Javan Rhino's.

Training the dogs and handlers
JAAN began it's first K9 program in 2019 with wildlife detection dogs, trained to intercept trafficked wildlife along Indonesia’s major smuggling routes. Building on this foundation, we created the new anti-poaching unit.

Dogs and handlers underwent intensive professional training in scent detection, tracking, field operations, and real-world deployment under the guidance of K9 instructor Frederique Chappée, with support from IFAW. This advanced training enabled the team to become fully operational, leading to a partnership with Ujung Kulon National Park to help combat poaching, protect the critically endangered Javan rhino, and strengthen wildlife security.

Patrolling Ujung Kulon National Park

K9 antipoaching activities include patrolling specific areas to prevent wildlife poaching and focusing on guarding the park's entrances to detect the movement of people and goods. The K9 antipoaching team is tasked with preventing and tracking poachers and/or individuals who illegally enter the national park and detecting snares intentionally set by poachers within the TNUK area. This is to protect the survival of the Javan rhinoceros and other biodiversity, a national pride.
Donate and make sure we can keep protecting Javan Rhinos!

We don't deduct any fees: 100% of donations goes directly to caring for the dogs, salary for their handlers, and technical equipment!

We are very grateful to IFAW and Frederique Chappèe. Without their support this important program could not be realized and operational.
