The film premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival in 2024. It then travelled to screens around the world, and it has since been nominated for Best Documentary at the AACTA Awards. For Ellis Park, JAAN Indonesia and everyone who has supported the sanctuary, this is a milestone. The story of animals that can never return to the wild reached audiences far beyond what we ever imagined.

‍

Directed by Justin Kurzel, the film follows Warren Ellis, a key member of The Dirty Three and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. It shows his path from the stage to a rainforest sanctuary, and the friendship that grew between him and Femke den Haas, founder of JAAN Indonesia. Together they built Ellis Park, a place of lifelong care for animals rescued from abuse and trafficking. Meet Rina, one of the sanctuary’s first residents and a main character in the film.
